Peter G. Stokes
Mr. Stokes was formerly with Lazard as a Senior Adviser and Global Head of Shipping within Lazard's Transportation/Logistics Group since 2009. Initially, he joined Lazard Capital Markets in 1998 and then moved to Lazard Brothers Corporate Finance Department in 2001.
M&A transactions on which Mr. Stokes has acted as an adviser include the merger of UASC with Hapag-Lloyd, the sale of selected RBS ship finance portfolios to i.a. Berenberg and Orix, the sale of HMM’s LNG fleet to an IMM-led consortium, the sale of Hapag-Lloyd AG to Albert Ballin KG and numerous other transactions. Mr. Stokes has also been involved in restructuring transactions, including Seadrill, General Maritime Corp., Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG), TORM (1st and 2nd round), Danaos Corp., Nautilus, Primorsk and other companies.
Currently, Mr. Stokes is an Advisory Board Member of Naviera Ultranav Ltda., Chile. He is also a Senior Adviser to Oak Hill Advisors LLP and Chairman of the Global Maritime Forum.
Prior to joining Lazard, he specialised in corporate finance advice to the shipping industry. In 1992, Mr. Stokes, with Mr. Goodgal, co-founded Castalia Offshore Partners Limited and other funds invested in the shipping sector. Between 1990 and 1999, he was a non-executive director and consultant to Bona Shipholding Ltd., a leading owner/operator of medium-sized tankers and OBOs. In 1984, Mr. Stokes was a founding director of Bulk Transport Ltd., a fund organised to acquire VLCCs. He was Head of Shipping and Insurance Research at Greig Middleton & Co. from 1979-1984 and was Business Editor of Lloyd's List from 1974-1979.
Mr. Stokes authored Ship Finance: Credit Expansion and the Boom-bust Cycle (1992, 1997). He is a citizen of the United Kingdom.
